Li Shaohong

Li Shaohong, Silver Bear Award-winning filmmaker, director of Powder the creator of the film

Li Shaohong is one of China's most prominent female filmmakers, having graduated from the Beijing Film Academy as a member of the class of 1978. She is regarded as a key figure in the "fifth generation" of Chinese filmmakers, alongside such notable peers as Zhang Yimou and Chen Kaige.

International fame for the Bloody dawn (1990), which won numerous awards, including the top prize at the Nantes Festival of the Three Continents. Her husband, Zeng Nianping, was an important collaborator as cinematographer on the film, and they have worked together on many successful films to date.

Their other outstanding work is the novel by Su Tong Powder (1994), which won the Silver Bear Award at the Berlin International Film Festival and is widely regarded as the first true female film in China. It was also the first film in mainland China not to be shot in Mandarin, with dialogue recorded in various Shanghai dialects. The film will also be screened for Hungarian audiences at this year's Image at Chinese Film Week, where the director, cinematographer and author of the original novel will join us for a panel discussion after the screening.
