A content review based on a film recommendation for Imagery Chinese Film Week by our guest of honour, Chris Berry, Professor at King's College London:
In Wandering Earth 2, we are transported to 2044, when the United Earth's government is faced with the realisation that the expansion of the Sun will soon make life on Earth impossible. Which is the better choice? The Digital Life Project, under which human consciousness would be electronically preserved for eternity, or the Moving Mountain Project, under which humanity would have to build massive engines to push the planet out of the solar system? The astronaut played by Wu Jing and Andy Lau, who plays the scientist, also face personal tragedies during their mission. The dramatic tension is caused not only by the impending doom of our planet, but also by the clash of obligations and interests with family and nation.
The film is based on the works of China's first Hugo Award-winning writer, Liu Cixin. But that didn't stop the director from sneaking in a few tributes to his personal favourite, Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey.
