Powder follows the lives and relationships of two women from the 1950s onwards, formerly prostitutes, who are taken away to be re-educated as part of a campaign to become useful members of society.
Their different personalities lead them to different decisions. While one escapes, the other stays in re-education. However, neither choice guarantees a happy outcome, as all stations in the human destiny are temporary. After many twists and turns, the former friends reconcile but go their separate ways.
The film won the Silver Bear Award at the 1995 Berlin International Film Festival.
The screening will be attended by director Li Shaohong, cinematographer Zeng Nianping, and Su Tong, the author of the novel on which the film is based and the film's screenwriter.
