Su Tong

Su Tong, renowned Chinese writer, guest of the Contemporary Chinese Book Club

Su Tong is one of the most prominent and internationally renowned figures in contemporary Chinese literature, Vice President of the Jiangsu Provincial Writers' Association and Professor at Beijing Teachers' Training University. Several of his novels have been published in Hungarian. His writings often look back to the past, but also hold up a mirror to the modern man. Two of his novels, which sensitively portray the plight of women in the shadow of different historical periods, are not only outstanding literary works, but have also become classic masterpieces of film history as film adaptations. The film week will also see the film "The Powder (1994) directed by Li Shaohong, which won the Silver Bear Award at the 1995 Berlin International Film Festival.

Before the screening, Su Tong will participate in a writer-reader meeting at an extraordinary book club organised in collaboration with the Contemporary Chinese Book Club, and after the screening he will join us on stage with Li Shaohong and the film's cinematographer Zeng Nianping to reveal the background and behind-the-scenes of the making of the film.
