The title of the film: The successor

Content review by our guest of honour, Chris Berry, Professor at King's College London, based on his film recommendation for the Imagery Chinese Film Week:

"Don't let my son know we're rich!" Two of China's comic stars, Shen Teng and Ma Li, play parents who decide that their child and heir must grow up with both feet on the ground. To ensure that the boy is not accidentally spoiled, they create a Truman Show-like sham to raise him. In the interest of the cause, the entire staff is enlisted to ensure that the illusion of poverty is constantly maintained.

In addition to funny situations, the film touches on often controversial issues in modern Chinese society and child-rearing, such as the extent to which a child should be given everything above and beyond his or her means, and how far a parent can go for the sake of his or her child.

Wang Yao, a lecturer at the Beijing Film Academy, will be the guest at the screening in Budapest.
