A content review based on a film recommendation for the Imagery Chinese Film Week by our guest of honour, Wang Yao, a lecturer at the Beijing Film Academy:

Dark history and murder mysteries wrapped in comedy? That's how you could sum up the fourth installment of Chinatown Detective, which takes viewers back to 1900, to San Francisco's Chinatown. Here, the murder of a white woman further inflames the already hostile atmosphere towards the Asian population. The unlikely pair of a Chinese hunter and an American-educated Chinese youth begin to unravel the case, which becomes increasingly convoluted when they become involved in the mysterious death of a famous Far Eastern magician. Together with a Chinese revolutionary and an influential figure in the neighbourhood, their small team of several will do their utmost to uncover the conspiracy behind the intertwined murders.

Wang Yao, lecturer at the Beijing Film Academy, will be the guest of the screening.
